The Pentagon’s recent report on North Korea’s nuclear weapons program is a wake-up call. The report concludes that North Korea is a “persistent threat” to the United States and its allies. North Korea has already developed nuclear weapons and is working on developing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of delivering those weapons to the United States.

The United States cannot wait until North Korea is regularly test-launching ICBMs with multiple re-entry vehicles and countermeasures to begin taking further action. The United States must act now to prevent North Korea from developing a nuclear arsenal that could threaten the United States and its allies.

There are a number of steps that the United States can take to prevent a nuclear crisis with North Korea. The United States should continue to work with its allies in the region, including South Korea and Japan, to deter North Korean aggression. The United States should also continue to pressure North Korea economically and diplomatically. The United States should also be prepared to use military force if necessary to prevent North Korea from using nuclear weapons.
