Sinner survives five-set thriller to reach Wimbledon quarter-finals
American youngster Ben Shelton pushes top seed all the way in thrilling fourth-round clash
Jannik Sinner needed to dig deep to overcome a spirited challenge from American youngster Ben Shelton and reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon on Sunday. The Italian top seed eventually prevailed 6-2 6-4 7-6 11-9 in a match that lasted three hours and 20 minutes.
Shelton, who is ranked 123rd in the world, had never won a Grand Slam match before this tournament but he showed why he is one of the most exciting young players in the game with a battling performance against Sinner. The American served superbly and hit some huge forehands, but Sinner was ultimately too strong for him.
Sinner will now face either Carlos Alcaraz or Brandon Nakashima in the quarter-finals. Alcaraz is the second seed in the tournament and is the favourite to win the title, while Nakashima is an unseeded American who has been in impressive form this season.
